WOW! It's been a long time since my last post! As you can see, we spent a lot of our winter cheering on the Steelers. And from the picture of the little girl in her mom's boots, Isabella is going on 16 most days! Aidan started karate about 6 weeks ago - he had his first belt test this weekend and is now a gold belt. He's loves it! Isabella is loving her new music class on Saturdays with a few of her little friends. And we are all looking forward to nice weather coming our way and Spring Break in a about a month!

Happy December! We've spent our December getting ready for the holidays, watching football, and doing lots of great playing. Aidan has really gotten into legos and building things. Isabella is contantly packing lunch bags, bags, and taking care of her babies or spiderman (her most favorite super hero recently).

We have also been busy doing lots of different things. Isabella is obsessed up trying to climb the stairs and falling in love with the water (swimming on Saturday mornings with five other friends), Aidan spends lots of time playing t-ball (this picture is from little league day at Camden Yards a couple of weeks ago) and cooking (for me on Mother's day). Both Aidan and Isabella are growing lots and enjoying the spring weather!

This past weekend, we spent the weekend at my parent's house. My grandfather was in town for the weekend visiting from FL. As you can see, we enjoyed the beautiful weather, loved on our new cousin, Owen, and truly enjoyed every minute we were there!

Aidan's first t-ball game of the season was last weekend. His team, the Giants, play each Saturday through June. Damian is the coach of the team. They are both very excited about starting this together! Here are some of the highlights.

On Saturday we went downtown to meet up with friends from N.J. for the cherry blossom parade. While in D.C. we also checked out some monuments and went to the national history museum to visit the dinosaur fossils. The weather and company were fabulous - it was a great day!

We had a very special Easter in our family this year! The newest addition, Owen Thomas Szykuc, was born at 2:10 a.m. Easter morning. Therefore, I was in VA beach with my sister, while Damian was here with the kids. We had just finished making Easter cookies, boiling eggs for decorating and were in the middle of an Easter egg hunt with our neighborhood when Alyson went to the hospital Saturday afternoon. After a long labor, Owen was born via c-section weighing in at 7 lbs and 7 ozs. Both baby and mommy are doing very well. While I was gone, Damian did a great job with the getting the kids ready for church and spending the afternoon at an Easter egg hunt and lunch with friends. We hope your Easter was special, too!

Spring Break

We've enjoyed our spring break this past week! We went to the zoo, had special visitors and spent lots of time at the playground and riding bikes!

The snow is finally melted and we are getting excited for Spring! Today it was beautiful and we were able to take a walk after dinner. It was fun to walk with Isabella in the jogging stroller and Aidan walking along with us. It's amazing how quickly they are both growing up! Aidan is signed up to play baseball this spring and his new nick name around our house is Cal for Damian and Jeter for me. Isabella or Miss America as we call her, is still as social as can be. She likes to entertain the room, or grocery store, by getting everyone and anyone to interact with her. She waves, says hi and is starting to pose and grin for anything that looks like a camera or is looking her way. She isn't the "signer" that her brother was at his age, but instead tells us what she wants, including "up", "eat", "all done", etc. I'll be downloading Spring pictures to post soon.

Blizzard 2010

The Blizzard of 2010 dumped almost 30 inches of snow on Germantown! We've spent the past few days digging out and playing in the snow. We're just about done with snow for the season after this storm!

After a really big weekend (Isabella's baptism and Aidan's 4th birthday party) we went to the pediatrician for Aidan's 4 year old visit and Isabella's 9 month old visit. What we learned was that we have really big kids!

At 4, Aidan is weighing in at 43 pounds and measuring over 42 inches. He is in the 90th percentile for both height and weight.

At 9 months old, Isabella is weighing in at 19 pounds and measuring 28 inches. She is in the 65th percentile for height and the 70th percentile for weight. The pediatrician was amazed that she is as verbal as she is - while we were there she said Aidan and up...she also says mama, dada and hi regularly.

People look at me and remark that my husband must be a really big guy - my response is generally not so much. Guess we just have big kids!

Aidan and I went on a little playdate bowling with a few of his friends yesterday. He had a great time with Catherine and Sabrina. Who would have known that bowling would have been such a hit with 3 year olds!

Christmas morning started very early when we were thrilled to see that Santa had come and enjoyed the cookies, milk and carrots we left for him and the reindeer. Aidan opened his presents at record speed, while Isabella took her time. The highlight for Aidan was his lego table from Santa - it will also keep his legos off the floor and away from Isabella, who puts everything and anything in her mouth!

After opening our gifts at home, we headed to PA where we celebrated with Damian's family. We had celebrated Christmas with my sister, her husband and my parents earlier that week.

Our first big snow of the season came this past weekend dumping 20 inches on Maryland! Aidan and Damian enjoyed playing in the snow, while Isabella and I stayed in the house for 2 days making baby food and cookies. We also had lots of family bonding time and played with lots of toys and games. What a wonderful winter wonderland!

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We hosted dinner here with Aunt Aly, Uncle Tommy, Nana and Grandpa. We really enjoyed having them here! The pictures above are from our first "holiday" event - on Saturday night we went to the Rio for a tree lighting ceremony and visit with Santa. There was also a lot of singing, dancing and holiday fun! We are so looking forward to lots of holiday fun this season!

Our summer has come to an end, and the new school year has started. We enjoyed swimming, hiking and spending time with family during the last few weeks of summer. Isabella is laughing and happy as can be. Aidan started his new school and loves it. Tonight he decided to recite the "Pledge of Allegiance" and then told us that's what he's learned so far at school. He also started soccer today for the fall. We are looking forward to a fabulous fall!

Last weekend, my sister, Alyson, got married in VA beach. We spent tons of time with her prior to the big day and then enjoyed celebrating with her and her husband, Tommy. What a special day!

Our month started with a visit to the Outer Banks. Aidan was able to go for the entire week with the rest of my family, and we joined him at the end of the week. On our way home we extended our trip in VA Beach with my sister and her fiance, Tommy.

Last weekend (I know...a week later...but it was a busy week!) we went to Isabella's first baseball game. On Saturday night we went to see the local minor league team, the Frederick Keys. We all had a ball at the game! Also on Saturday, we took our first trip to the pool for the season. Isabella just stayed in her seat, but Aidan had a blast swimming and playing in the pool. On Sunday, little Isabella rolled over for the first time! We keep telling her that she is still a little baby, but she seems to think differently!

On Wednesday, we went to the pediatrician for Isabella's 2 month appointment. Weighing in at 13 lbs and 7 ozs, she is off the charts for her weight! She is 22 1/4 inches (50%) and her head is 15 1/4 inches (50%). She has been smiling and cooing more this week. She is also sleeping for about 7 hours each night. She is a wonderful baby and we are loving every minute of her little baby life!

This week started on Sunday when during a family get together, Isabella got to meet a lot of Stephanie's side of the family, including Papa, Stephanie's grandfather. On Monday, we had special visitors from Richmond. Stephanie's college roommate and her children came to visit for the day - we had a great time! On Wednesday, we celebrated Isabella's 8 week old birthday! Lastly, big brother Aidan and little sister Isabella bonded all week with Aidan home from school for the summer. Stephanie heads back to work on Monday, but we know that Aidan and Isabella will take good care of one another (with our nanny, Renata, here as well). What a fabulous week!

3 am - I called again after I pumped to see how Ella was doing. Great news! The nurse turned to oxygen off, removed the nasal cannula and she is doing well on room air. One more thing gone and another step toward the door. The plan today was to attempt to breastfeed.

11 am - I texted Damian while he had Aidan at his swim lesson to tell him Ella looks great! The oxygen had been off since early this morning and she no longer had things attached to her except for the monitors. Also, I told him to make sure he brings the car seat to the hospital because the doctor wanted to do the car seat test today! If she doesn't desaturate and her vital signs looked good she will come home tomorrow! YEAH!!!

2 pm - Isabella passed her hearing test today! Her hat is off and she looks like a new kid. She has beautiful dark brown hair! I breastfed for the first time and she did great! Ella latched on pretty quickly and did well on one side. Aidan visited her again and gave her the pink bear he picked out for her from his big brother class he attended. He also wore his "I am a Big Brother" shirt again! His choice.

3:30 pm - Aidan did a great job while visiting Ella. He was so gentle and gave her a big kiss as you can see in the picture. Ella continues to do well!

7:30 pm - Damian & I had a stress free dinner out before we went back to the hospital. Our baby girl is scheduled to come home tomorrow and is doing great! We joked because it was probably the last time we will have a dinner, just the two of us, for a long time!!!

Thank you to all for your kind notes, thoughts, and prayers! We are ecstatic Isabella will be joining us at home tomorrow!

3 am - I have been pumping at home and starting to get more. I called the NICU to see how Ella was doing. The nurse said that she continued to do well.

11 am - Ella did so well overnight I got to feed her from a bottle for the first time. She took 45 ml's! The oxygen has been weened down and they hope to have it off within a day or two. The IV fluids had been turned off since Ella was tolerating the feedings so well!

2 pm - Damian fed her this time and she ate 50 ml's while I pumped! Big brother Aidan got to see her for the first time today. He was so great with her! He was talking to her telling her, "It is your big brother Aidan" and "I love you!" He was so interested in the environment of the NICU. He was curious about the monitors so Damian told him about the EKG waveforms and all the numbers. Damian said that maybe we have a doctor, nurse or better yet a future nurse anesthetist on our hands!

5:30 pm - Isabella ate 55 ml's and was bright eyed the whole time she ate. Since she has been doing so well, the oral gastric tube was removed. Ella got a little mad but as silly as this sounds it was good to hear her cry. The nurse told us that if she was off the oxygen by tomorrow & then for 24 hours, she could probably be home by Monday! While we were hanging out at the hospital all day, Damian & I attended an infant CPR class!

8:30 pm - Ella did well eating again! The nurse plans to remove the nasal cannula tonight to see how she does. We will be back again tomorrow after morning rounds.

8 am - It was absolutely beautiful outside today after two rainy, gloomy days. We told ourselves that it was going to be a great day! Ella did well overnight and a bassinet is ready for her if she does well on the nasal cannula today. We fed her again and I am getting more breastmilk for Ella. We will be back after the 11 am morning rounds to see what the Dr. says.

11:20 am - What a surprise!!! Ella was off of CPAP and had been on the nasal cannula since 9 am and doing great! The tube feedings had been increased and she continued to tolerate them well. If she keeps this pace up she would be upgraded to the bassinet. She was more awake, alert, moving around and showing signs she is ready for breastfeeding by rooting around for the pacifier. As long as she can tolerate 40 ml's of breastmilk and be off of the oxygen for 24 hrs., she could go home on Sunday!

5 pm - Ella is doing AWESOME!!! The tube feedings were increased to 25 ml's and she is on a low level of oxygen. At 8 pm her feeding was increased to 30 ml's and by tomorrow morning they could be at 40 ml's.

8:30 pm - Ella continues to do GREAT!!! She received 30 ml's of feeding and tolerated them well. The nurses have been great! Tonight's was a little rough around the edges at first but was nicer as time went by. She was a little particular about things but she is a nurse and Damian said he can't blame her because, "All nurses are anal. " We will be back in the morning after rounds.

8 am - I have been pumping and we have been taking the breastmilk to the NICU every three hours for Ella. She has been tolerating the feedings well & is pooping and peeing well. The neonatologist has been great! He showed us the chest x-rays and the one today showed that the fluid has has cleared from Isabella's lungs. Her labs look good as well. The goal is to increase her feedings and decrease the IV fluids as tolerated. They also want to wean the amount of oxygen she is receiving and eventually try humidified oxygen with a nasal cannula!

1 pm - Ella is looking better and better each time we see her! Her respirations are slowing down and she is getting a whopping 10 ml's of breastmilk/formula every 3 hours.

11 pm - No nasal cannula yet but she still looks great! She continues to tolerate the feedings well. I continued to pump for Ella and we take it to her every 3 hours. We also have been checking her temperature and changing her tiny diapers. We were disappointed that she wasn't on the nasal cannula yet but we have to trust that the Dr.'s and nurses are doing what is best for her. Ella began showing us her feistiness & got mad a few times when we change her. It was fine with us because she never really cried a lot after she was born. This means she is getting stronger, but her oxygen saturation decreases when she does and takes a minute to recover. Our hope that she will be on the nasal cannula tomorrow!

April 14, 2009 - I had contractions that were around 5 minutes apart for several hours through the night and we went to the hospital. We were sent home at 8:30 am due to failure to progress. At around 12:30pm my water broke and back to the hospital we went and got admitted this time. After a few hours of monitoring they started the Pitocin to speed up the labor.

April 15, 2009 -Through the night the contractions got closer and more intense and around 2:30 am I decided I had been brave enough and decided to get an epidural. I was much more comfortable and Damian & I finally got a some much needed rest.

7:30 am - The Dr. arrived discovered that there was still a fluid sac that was cushioning Isabella's head which is why the labor was so long! Once it was broke things went FAST!!!

8:30 am - The contractions got intense and the epidural was not really working well. The Dr. and nurse came in and I was fully dilated and ready to push! Finally!!!

9:10 am - After 20 minutes of pushing Isabella Colleen Brant was born! Yeah!!! 6 lbs 6 oz and 19 inches long. She is beautiful!!! She spent about an hour with us when they decided to take her to the NICU for observation. She was breathing a little too fast.

4 pm - Isabella was stable but had to have CPAP to help give her oxygen and get the fluid out of her lungs. She also had a feeding tube so that she could be fed.

We continued to visit Isabella throughout the day so that we could help with the feedings.

Our Easter celebration started last night with the dying of Easter eggs. Aidan had a great time, and as you can see, some of our eggs are super hero themed! This morning we headed to church followed by an Easter egg hunt.

Baby Ella Report

This past Wednesday, the ultrasound showed that baby Ella weighs over 5 lbs and busy growing! Her anticipated arrival is still the 16th of April, which is a little less than 4 weeks away! We are all getting excited about finally meeting this little peanut sometime very soon!

Last Saturday, Aidan had his first experience bowling. He did a great job, and although the ball took a while to get to the pins, he knocked down up to 7 pins at a time. To say the least, he had a blast! Too bad bowling leagues have an age minimum!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy 3rd Birthday Aidan!

The end of December and the beginning of the new year have been very busy for the Brant family. We spent Christmas eve and morning at our house, with the arrival of Santa and one very excited little boy. We then headed to Grandpa and Nana's house in Virginia to spend Christmas day and the next few days with lots of family. It was wonderful to see and spend time with everyone! After that, we headed home and rang in the new year comfy in our pajamas with an almost 3 year old sound asleep. Right after the new year, Grandpa and Grandma headed down our way from Pennsylvania to celebrate Christmas and Aidan's birthday for the weekend. After a very busy week back to our normal routine, we celebrated Aidan's third birthday with 10 of his closest friends at Romp-N-Roll. He is already talking about how Christmas and his birthday are coming next year! To be a kid again!

Last weekend, Damian graduated with a master's degree in Nursing Anesthesia from the University of Maryland. His commitment and dedication to learning for the past 28 months will really make a difference to his patients! We are so proud of him!!

As we got closer to our Thanksgiving destination in PA, we found more and more snow. These pictures are of Aidan playing in the snow. He had a blast being pulled around on the sled, sledding down the hill by himself, and feeding Kooper snowballs. We can't wait to get our first snow of the season in MD and have the sled waiting!

Newest Addition

Our newest addition will arrive at the end of April. From the pictures, you can see that the baby is growing well. It is amazing that I am just about 16 weeks and everything is as developed as it is. I started to feel the baby move this week and one of the pictures shows little Brant trying to do some thumb sucking! Aidan kisses the baby every night and tells it to keep growing and that he loves it. This is an awesome experience for us all!

Here is our dragon from Halloween! He was really excited by the entire event - which lasted about two weeks at our house. His line from the evening was "trick or treat...grr..." We had a great time with our scary dragon!
